Well , I had to make the toughest decision of my life (so far) last night ... I put my dog to sleep  . He was suffering from liver failure , and it was deemed the most "humane" thing to do . It was pretty much a shocker to us (as these things usually are) , especially since he seemed perfectly fine at his last check-up only back in June . I guess it's not something they "look" for , so it went on undetected until I took him to the vet yesterday morning . I just couldn't see why I should be selfish & make hime suffer more just so I could have a few more days (hours?weeks?) with him . It was VERY tough to do , but we felt it was best(?) for him . We were there when he took his last doggie nap , man ... was THAT tough  !
Ever since I was small , growing up with my grandparent's German Shep , I always wanted a Shep . A nice , loyal friend who I could hang out with . Back in '94 I got my wish . We picked him out of a full litter at 8 weeks old & brought him home . I spent countless hours playing with him , training him to be a good , loyal watchdog , but yet a sweetheart when it came to kids . I succeeded . We almost lost him at about 3 years old when he had a serious infection that started between the muscles in his left rear leg . The specialist said at the very least , he would lose the leg . I would have none of that . They did some surgeries & saved him AND his leg , although he had a limp from there on . The limp never even bothered him , he could run & carry on with the best of them . As the years went on , the limp got a bit worse , but still not enough to slow him down . As it turns out , my perseverence way back then bought him 7 more years of good livin' . Every day , I was glad I did that . His face was the first one I saw when I woke up in the morning , the last I saw as I left for work. He was always the first I saw when he greeted me at the door when I got home from work , and the last I saw as I went up to bed each night . I can hardly remember my life without him . This is not gonna be easy . It was very hard typing this , but I felt I had to do it in his honor .

Oh man. I am so sorry. I know what you are going through though. We had a part Pekenise/Yorkshire Terrier mix that we had to put to sleep when she was 17yrs old because she had gone deaf, blind, and had arthritis......she was just suffering. I hate it when this happens, but it's better to end their pain than to let them go on like that. <great big hugs to you>

Allen, I'm sooo sorry!! As pet owners we have to make decisions that are sometimes tough, with their best interests at heart we always make the right decision for them. Duke gave you and MaryJane his unconditional love for many happy years. What you did last night was the most unselfish thing you could have done for him. Hard, yes, but always remember that you did what was best for him . {{{Big hugs}}} to both you and MaryJane.

sorry for the loss in the family. i know what it feels like to have to let go of a friend like that. it's hard. but now, almost 6 years later, i have a new friend, Oakley, and he's awesome!

Beautiful dog. My condolences.
That name is awesome too. Maybe someday there will be a "Duke Von Maximillion the second" and that dog will be lucky to have such a caring owner. Just as lucky as you were to have such a great dog for so many years.

Sorry for your loss. I know exactly what you're feelin. Last year we had to put my dog cocoa down. She was a irish setter/springer spaniel mix. The best dog i could ask for. We got her when i was 2 and put her down when i was 18. Needless to say i DIDN'T know life with out her. It was like putting down my little sister. Even now, over a year later, even with my new pup, i miss her.

So sorry. I can't imagine how hard it will be when we have that day come. Our pup is two now...she'll be around for a long time to come, but I already dread the day.
