Looking for advice. I am unable, on my own, to replace the probable clutch that has gone bad in my 98.5 E1. The dealership wants $1000 to get into the trans and diagnose along with an estimated $400-500 in parts. I was getting ready to sell before this all happened. Am I better of fixing her or do you think I could sell to someone that has the know-how and/or desire to add upgraded parts such as shift forks, clutch, and LSD? I need to take action either way. Thanks in advance for the opinions.

What year/model is it? Miles? Conditon? The answers depend on how much the car is worth. Check for the Kelly Blue Book Value (kbb.com) and see whats it's worth. Any less than $3000 and it prolly isn't worth the repair if you plan on selling it anyways.

A broken car is very hard to sell, even if it was some minor problem.
Cost me $500 labour to re and re the clutch. I had the parts. Thats $500 Canadian. Autozone or Pep Boys might have an inexpencive (cheap) part.
Don't fall over dead with a Stealership quote....Look around.
Add the new parts to the price and advertisment - as in - 'see how I have taken care of this car, I even replaced the clutch so you'd know your buying a good car'!

Hmmm, how much would you sell it for?
Ive been wanting a MTX car latily....... Ive been fulfilling my needs with an MTX Escort... I wish it was a Contour...

If you decide to fix it, make sure you take it to a reputable Tranny Shop, and not a dealership. You'll get much better service, probably faster service, and for less money than a dealership will charge.

Dunno where in MI you are but there are a lot of handy cegers in the detroit area...might be able to get someone to help you rebuild it on your own. Some of those maniacs would probably just work for beer.

Get a quote from Terry Haines, he's in your neck-o-the-woods, IIFC. Do a search.
I can't remember how close he is to you - some here I'm sure can let you know - but I'd give him a call and get a price from him.
Then you can determine if you'd be able to sell it for more with the repairs.
You have to deeply discount a broken car as the buyer faces many potential problems that don't always showup on broken units so they've got to allow for that as well.
