I admit that the pipe does get hot but when we tested a ZX2 (soory not quite Contour related) with an air filter relocation kit, the pipe remained hot, close to the engine but the performance did not suffer. This was in 90 degree weather, last week. I would surmise that when at speed, the air velocity is high enough that the temperature rise of the air is very little, though the pipe is hot. Looks like the air passes fast enough into the engine without picking up much heat from the aluminum. Also we had the autotap plugged in and we found that the intake air temperature was only about 20 degrees higher than ambient.
I guess what I am trying to get at is that as long as the incoming air is relatively cooler, the hot intake pipe will have little affect on the temperature rise.
