It must be some kind of emotional pain, abuse or trauma such as molestation, rape, childhood abandonment, etc and their trying to drown their pain. Some people choose drugs or booze, some choose food.
Shame on US for calling him FAT? What are you smoking? The man weighs 1000 pounds!
How 'bout shame on his wife for feeding him, or shame on him for allowing his "disorder" to get this out of control. Oh no, I forgot: it's our fault. What was I thinking?!
No one force fed him or gave him a gravy I.V. to make him gain 800 pounds over night! This kind of weight gain takes YEARS! Surely there were signs that something wasn't right back when he weighed, oh, I don't know, LESS THAN 1000 POUNDS!
I'm not completely heartless, though. I hope the guy does lose the weight. I just hope you and I don't have to pay for it. (Who am I kidding, I'm Canadian! I'm not paying for s**t!)
You're a genius! He's Fat! Did you go to an Ivy League School to figure that one out? Do you think others haven't figure that out, or are you so insure that you need to make fun of others in order to elevate your own self esteem? Sad either way.

the biggest patient that i have personally ever seen here is 1050 pounds and this was a 32 year old woman. she died 5 days after being admitted for respiratory failure. i have seen multiple patients here 400,500,600,700,800 pounds or more. these people end up being on ventilators and trached for the rest of their lives and that's when we have to get involved with their care. i weigh 280 but i also ride mountain bikes 30- 40 miles a week if not more. i can't imagine lying in bed and not being able to get out of bed without 4 or 5 people helping me to get up.

Unless your 7 ft tall some one needs to sound the alarm when you start creeping towards the 300-400 pound range.

We're all supposed to feel sorry for this guy, like he's a victim. Everyone thinks they're victims now, it's crazy.
Attaboy, delmar. Makin' me proud to be a member of the human race.
The fat dude is obviously really messed up. He probably has an EXTREME genetic predisposition to obesity and some serious psychological problems too (it looks like he may have been trying to kill himself with food). He also has apparently had the bad luck of living with an idiot who has been feeding him nearly to death. His genetic defect and his mental problems and his stupid "enabler" friend are like the "perfect storm" to cause his obesity.
Don't you see that people with certain inherited traits (and other contributing factors) have no real control over their condition? This guy is not your average overweight person who just needs to exercise and stop supersizing his meals; you don't get that obese just by being careless or by having poor impulse control.
Do you want to blame the people who are born with bipolar syndrome or retardation or spina bifida for their conditions too? You are cold, man. Very cold.

"Obesity risk depends on two factors: genetic variants in candidate genes, and biographical exposure to environmental risk factors," said M. C. Ochoa and colleagues at the University of Navarra. "It is necessary to perform new studies, with appropriate control groups and designs, in order to reach relevant conclusions with regard to gene/environmental (diet, lifestyle) interactions."
Blaming genes on this fat fu(k is pretty much 1/2 ignorant.
Granted it's growing fast, genetic research is still in its infancy and I wouldn't rely on it until I've seen something more concrete.
I have no sympathy for him.
If you'd like some analytical data, check out a book by Greg Critser called How Americans Became the Fattest People in the World. I think you'll enjoy it. In it, you'll find out that the whole world is getting fatter - with America leading the "race". The main cause? Cheaper food and cheaper, more fattening ingredients.

Sal and delmar are confusing two very different things. They are confusing our national obesity problem (25 to 50 excess pounds, caused by too little exercise and too much junk food) with this particular man's morbid obesity problem (800 excess pounds, caused by unfortunate genetics, psychological disfunction, and a clueless enabler).
Most obese people can control their problem with moderate exercise and better impulse control. But the 1000lb man has serious medical and mental problems. He would have needed major surgery (gastric bypass, stomach stapling, etc.) and heavy-duty psychotherapy to avoid his obesity problem.
If you can't understand the difference, and you still have no sympathy, I can't help you.

You're very right - this is a whole different class of obesity and must be treated in a very different way. But, to say it's purely genetic is wrong. To say he's not predisposed with an inherent ability to gain weight is, IMO also wrong. It's the good ol' combo of nature AND nurture.
After a certain point, the wife should have said to herself, "Ok, he's got something wrong," and tried to help. He obviously wasn't in the state of mind to help himself.
