You gotta let it rest.

Your Zetec is probably tired.

Let it rest for a few days and go nice on it.

Why would you want to go over 3500 rpms anyways?? Do you have any idea how much stressing for your engine that is?

that is like 60 rpms in one second !!!

how would you like if i told you to pedal a bike 60 times in 1 sec??

You would be exhausted, right?

so let it rest...

It's not a problem. It's a rev limiter in park/neutral that prevents people from revving their contours real high and damaging anymore than the revving to ~3500-4k rpm already does.

Is it any more damaging reving to ~3500-4k rpms in neutral than is it in drive?

My mechanic told once that it is, while i was setting the shiftlight on a gtech. He went crazy when he heard me revving to 4500rpm on neutral !!!!

Like everyone else has said, you arent supposed to rev above 3500 in neutral/park. my Mom's grand Prix doesnt allow me to. Anything over 4K rpm's is extensive wear to the engine, and by extensive I mean it does more wear then you average take off from stop. Its why I want to get a tach, cause sometimes I have to take off hard to get into traffic, but I dont want to push the engine to hard.

it's because the engine has no load on it that it is bad for it to be revved so high in nuetral/park. that is all.

Ok mine goes all the way up to 6-7krpm no problem in nuetral or in gear. I think the atx's are set up this way so you don't damage the tranny if you do a park to drive drop while reving the motor.
