I'm sure it's been asked 1,000 times but I just got my 1998 SVT last week. When you take the resonator off, is it worth it or is it entirely too loud? I want the car to sound a little sportier, but I don't want it to sound like crap. I did have a Civic Si with an exhaust on it, so I'm used to the noise.

Actually about 5000 times...

I liked the sound on my stock SE with 2" pipes. When I went to 2 1/4 plumbing (Like SVT??) The low freq drone from 1200-2500 rpm got annoying in the cabin. I'd say pull the stock res and enjoy it for a few days, and then go get a hi-flow res installed before you go nuts. wink

I just did mine. I dont know how to describe the sound at all. Its got more rumble at idle and when you get in the higher rpm band it starts to get a little more high pitched but not to bad a lot more mean and agressive sounding thats for sure. When its cold its really droning and raspy (high pitched). My other mods might make it a little more louder but I highly doubt it. It costs anywhere from 20-30 bucks to have them rip it out of there, if you got the money to spend have them take it out and keep the part, if you dont like it after a month go weld that baby back in. It doesnt sound any different then a civic with exhaust on the coldest day of the year (comparing it to my friends integra anyways) Maybe someone can describe it better then I.

I took mine off a little while ago. It idles a little louder, and has more of a bassier sound in the cabin while idling. At between 2 and 3 thousand RPM the exhaust makes a steady drone in the car. From 3- 4 thousand, when the timing is advanced it has a real nice performance sound in the cabin. Above 4 it sounds like a race car.

From the outside, I don't know, but my friends tell me it is real loud.

I found a good use for the resonator though. I connected it to the exhaust of my central vacuum system in my house, so now I can be in the garage while it is running, before, it sounded like there was a 747 in there.

Edelbrock RPM #5503 from Summitracing.com (~$80)
Nothing is as good!

Otherwise I would suggest the Dynomax 2.5" Bullet (~$40)

Stay the f**k away from all other glass packs etc.

Leave the exhaust alone.. Have someone drive your car by you at speed, and revel at how good it sounds. You think it's quiet because the resonator makes the cabin quiet. Why are people telling you "take it out, and when the noise gets to you, put it back in"? Because it gets annoying. That's just dumb, and a waste of money to boot. If you want some more sound, get the KKM, that provides a nice little sound when you get on it smile

Definitely do a search on this topic, as you'll see it's been beaten to death.

yeah, i already installed the kkm and i love how my engine doesn't sound like a lawnmower anymore. It purrs like a little kitten. I have heard bad things about glassboxs. I'm mainly concerned about my emissions. I live in pa, and have to watch our for that.
