What is the compession of the engine? When dealing with an engine of unknown history you should start with some sort of baseline, and this seems to have been overlooked. I would also connect a vaccum gauge to the intake manifold and check reading at idle, take notice of needle fluctuations.

My bet is wrong plug wire order. Only thing that explains backfiring.

I had a no start, misfiring, rough idle, power loss issue and it turned out to be the fuel pump.
With a fuel pressure gauge installed, turn the key to on, but don't start the engine. Check the priming of the fuel pump. Mine was priming at 5psi on a warm enigine, it should be at 25 psi (I believe) on the 1st prime.
