Heya all,
I was wondering if they turn your car on and off several times during a smag test, or if they just hook up the computer, and hoses, then turn the car on once. The reason I ask this, is because I am throwing a CEL, and wonder if I can get away without fixing all the crappola.
Cheers, Tom

they remove your gascap, it will throw a CEL due to lack of pressure in the tank...
they run your car and do the various tests all at once... but it's been a couple of years since i've done one - so maybe there's a new process?

I just had mine done:
#1 they load your cr on the dyno to simulate load.
#2 they hook up your car to the sniffer and run you car in 2st and third gear (25 MPH 90 second run and a 45 mph 90 second run)
# 3 if you pass that (and no CEL's) they hook up a device to your gas cap to make sure it holds pressure.
took about 45 minutes to get done. But they do not start your car more than once.
But they do turn your car to the on position to make sure all your warning lights light up....they way people use to pass, was they would take out the CEL light bulb (before CPU were so advanced) and run it that way....now if any of your waring light bulbs are out its an automatic fail.
I passed with a intermitient CEl(comes abck every 3000 miles) and a 3 liter hybrid motor.

I could have swarn at the last test I got (test only station) they hooked up a computer to the OBD port. I figured they verified that the car had actually passed all it's monitor tests before running it on the dyno.
If they do that you may not pass as it'll probably come up with uncompleted tests.

This was my experience. I passed all emissions, gas cap check, and the they told me I had a CEL that had been cleared and not fixed. I had just cleared the CEL that morning. I fixed the cause of the CEL and went back a couple of times and was told several items were not complete, O2 heater, catalyst, etc. I finally passed but it took a while for the ECU to learn the new parameters. If you have a CEL or if you clear a CEL without a repair, they will know.
I spoke to a mechanic that told me the OBD III will be no fun at all, and that it may be capable of reporting a CEL to the DMV via transponder. Can any of our experts confirm this?

Yes you are correct...they do do that..sorry i left that out....The night before my smog, i kept my negative battery terminal off all night...drove my car for 15minutes to warm up, got it smoged and no CEL was thrown.
So thats how i got mine...but my CEl is for gutted pre-cats.

Just check your code and fix the problem....that 's pretty good insurance on not failing for a CEL.

I want to know what would happen if I drove in with my fordchip chip in When I plug in my laptop the cat efficiency, egr and downstream O2 tests are not just disabled - they are totally removed. I'm curious if the test just looks for uncompleted tests (in which case I'd be ok) - or if it knows which tests should be there and sees if they are passed?
