Any of you guys get Doom 3 yet? I'm in the process of upgrading my computer right now so I can play the game but I'm stuck on the video card. My current computer is: AMD Athlon XP 1700+, 768mb PC2700, Geforce 3 ti200 64mb, Westerm Digital 200gb 8mb cache, Win2k. I ordered an Athlon XP 2400+ Thoroughbred so now my next move is the video card. Is there even a video card out there under $150 that'll run this game? If so, what are my choices?

You may want to wait for the new processor to come in before you order a new video card. Granted, the game will be video intensive as hell, but when my Radeon 8500 64MB card died and I replaced it w/ a 9500 Pro 128MB, I noticed NO DIFFERENCE whatsoever in my games...I was actually pretty bummed out. You may notice a bigger difference since you're still on a geForce 3, but I would definitely look into benchmarks from a site such as www.tomshardware.com to see which suits your needs the best.

you just described my computer to a T and I can play doom at lowest detail at playable speeds - doesnt look like ass either, and is plenty scary. if youre looking for a $150 video card that will run doom, give maybe this one a shot? http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=14-102-303&depa=1
now officially a troll, i guess. used to have a black 96 SE, until it broke down one too many times.
now I'm hunting for a motorycle.

For about $20 more you can get the ATI 9800 Pro that will play Doom without breaking a sweat! Well worth the extra money I say since the reviews I've read say the graphics are outrageous but the game is only good. Yes the CPU upgrade is a must! I think the ID recommendation is 2 GHz.

I have a 128 MB Radeon 9600 Turbo in my laptop (1.7GHz Centrino, 512 MB DDR RAM) and the game runs perfect on medium settings with all effects turned on. IMHO, the game is REALLY good, really scary, and still looks better than most games even on the lowest settings (640x480 low quality)

YES, MORE NEWEGG USERS! I would say go with a Radeon 9800 Non-pro. Newegg has one for 160$ (thats including shipping). That would be your best bang for your buck.

Sorry, but a 9800 non-pro would be a waste of money. If you are intent on a 9800, get the pro. The extra preformance is worth the money. with that being said go with an nvidia card if you are going to play a bunch of doom3. Most reviews are indicating that nvidia cards are better then ati cards due to the way that they work internally. I like the first nvidia card that was linked to. I have a 9600 pro in my desktop and it runs just okay with a 2800+ and 2gb dual channel DDR. It doesn't run at all on my laptop... 1.5 centrino with intel graphics =)

The 9800SE in the link above is, and no offence to the poster, a rather crappy card. It has a 128bit memory bus and doom3 really benefits from a 256bit bus. I would recommend getting a 256bit 9800 pro with either 128MB or 256MB of ram. I picked up a 256MB 9800 pro off newegg and flashed the 9800XT bios to the card and it is fully recognized as a 9800XT, even enables the temp probe and OVERDRIVE functionality. That said I am getting about 50FPS average with a P4 2.2Ghz, 512MB of PC2700 and the 4.9beta drivers at 1024x768 high quality. I would also watch newegg's refurbished cards, a have picked up a few and they have all been fine and you can get some amazing deals.

Just another thought, this 9800 non pro for $160 is built on the 9800PRO pcb and has the 9800PRO heatsink and BGA ram so with some ramsinks it could probably be overclocked to 9800PRO speeds, just a thought.
