i understand that. my question was do we know who was competing for the other contracts and do we know their qualifications? i don't doubt that haliburton is very qualified for the work they're doing, i'm just questioning whether there were other competitive bidders.

DynCorp and Raytheon (one of my previous customers) have come into play on large-scale govt. contracts against Haliburton (KBR). It's a public fact that Haliburton competed against a number of other entities for these govt. contracts...
Do a google on LOGCAP; this will inform you better on things than I can. KBR (acquired by Haliburton in the late 90's, IIRC) has done work under the Clinton and Bush administrations in the past.
It's funny you bring up the "competitive" issue. Follow this:
KBR was awarded contracts in the Balkans in the late '90s under the Clinton administration, even though they weren't awarded the LOGCAP contract renewal during that time...
In short, Clinton circumvented this construct (via a SOLE-SOURCE contract) and paid a MUCH higher price for their services than they would to the winning provider than was held under LOGCAP provisions.
Not a word was said in the media.
Bush uses this construct and get's hammered for doing what was contractually put in place before the Iraqi War. All of a sudden, cost overruns that are hiccups compared to the total values of the contracts and compared to the HUGE over-runs in the Clinton years in the Balkans are blown out of proportion by the media...
Coincidence? I think not.
Again, search on LOGCAP and KBR/Haliburton. You should get the good, bad and ugly on it.

I don't dispute Halliburton/its subsidiaries are the best entities to do certain jobs. I don't even really have a problem with Cheney's past history with the firm, although his initial reluctance to sever ties was a little sketchy.
But I will point out the original contract to extinguish oil fires was no-bid and worth a few Bill. As has been stated, these types of contracts deserve scrutiny.

then i suggest you do some research. even though he volunteered, how bush got into the texas national guard as quickly as he did is still a mystery. i'm sure having a congressman father and friends of the family in high places in the texan beauracracy didn't hurt. but i'm sure that to most people who don't know it's just a coincedence.
STILL A MYSTERY....correct.
Originally posted by Dan Nixon: However, a privileged person to the degree Bush was could have fully AVOIDED military service period.
that would look pretty bad when your dad is a famed fighter pilot. i'm sure avoiding service all together was not an option.
......Correct
Originally posted by Dan Nixon: Bush was trained as an F-104 fighter pilot, noted to be one of the hardest jets to fly..
hmm. i thought it was an f-102. a jet that apparently was being phased out of service (i think even recalled) by the time bush would have been eligible to go to veitnam.
Correct, my bad F-102. Same difference really for this discussion.
Originally posted by Dan Nixon: This is dangerous work, just the training...NOT for gutless punks looking for an "easy" way out.
i agree. however i still hold the position that a pilot serving in vietnam is facing a much more dangerous job than a pilot stationed at home. keep in mind these people are attacking kerry's service...it's a lose situation in my book to begin comparing it to kerry's since he faced a tougher situation.
Correct..we discussed this before. Being a fighter pilot stateside is dangerous, being a fighter pilot in combat is MORE dangerous. I did not compare with Kerry.. I point out that Bush's service carried risk in its own right. If I were to compare, it was more risk that the majority of Kerry's naval service on a carrier support ship, less than his brief service on swift boats...fair?
Originally posted by Dan Nixon: He has brought this attack by other swift boat vets who knew him and what really happened
i may be wrong but these people didn't even serve under his command or on any of his boats! how can they know what happened?
One served under him, the rest were based together, and ran boats within close visual range as I understand. I would think they would see a fair amount and get a good feel for the guy. Others formed a different, and favorable oppinion. Probably some truth on both sides...

JaTo, I have to thank you for the information. I will be doing more research on this when I get home.
I'd also like to say, even though we don't all agree on this subject, I'm happy to see it hasn't gotten way out of hand. This has been a (mostly) civil discussion, and even though we know we won't change each others minds, debate such as this is always nice. =) Kudos to the CEG community on this...
