I've noticed the same reverse/first problem as well. I have a much harder time with reverse, but I have seen first do it a couple times. Linkage makes sense. My car has 65k on it, and I don't think the clutch has ever been replaced. I know I've had to let off the pedal almost completely to engage since I bought it at 42k, but it's still going strong. If you treat em right, they last. It's stood up to autocrossing, so I guess they're pretty strong.
