It happened again yesterday: some idiot at a lube shop overfilled my engine . This was the third time. Each time it was a different idiot at a different lube shop doing the overfilling. I'd change my oil myself but I don't have a place to do it . I was always told that too much oil was very bad for the engine. I've heard that too much oil in the engine will work itself into a lather and not lubricate properly......My engine does not burn or leak any oil so the level after the oil change is where it stays until the next one. Am I wrong in thinking this in harmful? Do those lube shop people know something I don't know? (Unlikely....but I want to be sure). Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Never heard of an oil place over filling. Pretty easy to tell them how much to put in and then they show you the stick.

I worked at a valvoline instant oil change in college, and once saw a car get filled with oil by two people. Nothing like 10qt's of mobil to lube your engine! They caught it before the car was started, but another time I saw a Volvo come back 2 weeks after an oil change like 1-2 qt's too much oil in it (I seem to recall we thought the owner was the one who screwed up and added to much after the fact - but don't recall for sure). Buyer beware of the oil change shop!
-edit-
I also remember one guy that hated to look up capacities so filled from memory and felt close was good enough. If it was a little low he'd walk to the driver side door with the dipstick pointed toward to floor to get the oil to "run" to the ful mark. If it was too full he'd hold up the dipstick to the light like he was having trouble reading the new clean oil and wipe the extra with his thumb as he lowered the stick.

The level was about 1/4 inch or so above the MAX dot thing.....so probably not too much but I was still a little concerned. I went back and had them take out about half a quart and now the level is perfect. I had never heard of this happening either before it happened to me. There is one certain lube shop in my hometown that overfills all the frikkin time. It happened to me there once....and it's also happened to everyone else I've talked to that went there. Needless to say....none of us have gone back there again. Anyways, thanks for the replies everyone. And that horror story.....ten quarts in one engine .......yikes!

If its a v6 thats right (well for my svt thats right..)
after i do a 6 quart oil change, it sits ruffly about 1/4 of an inch (deffinatly no more than 1/4) above max.

MysticFreak, 1/4 inch over the max. mark shouldn't do any harm. If it were much more than the 1/4 inch then it could be a concern. I overfill mine using 6L of oil at every change. Specs call for 5.5L (5.8 qts) with an oil filter change.
I use my car mostly on the track and so I put the extra in to give it a little insurance against the dreaded - spun bearing from oil starvation concern.
Moderate overfilling used to be a concern years ago. IIRC, mostly because seals were made of poorer quality material and didn't like the slightly higher oil pressure associated with an overfill.

They actually did you a favor.
1/4 over is about 6qts (like previously stated)
That's the minimum you want to run at all times.

I didnt think they sold mobile at valvoline??
I worked at a dealer that had a lube bay and one idiot filled the oil to the brim of the oil filler tube! Luckily it was caught before it was too late. I dont trust any of those places anymore so I either do it myself or check it right after I get home.
