Link to Group Buy Well, I finally got around to installing a component set using the same drivers Dave is using in his GB. I ended using a pre-built crossover instead of Dave's crossover design due to my laziness (will replace with the custom-built one in the next coupla weeks).
The components were installed in the stock door locations of a 2001 Chevy Silverado with the tweet mounted a few inches above the mid. I used some poly-backed roofing material as dampening. The components are being powered off of the stock head unit (may 10-12w per channel).
Bass response was impressive. The woofers play impressively low with good output. I will definately be picking up some more of them for future use.
Midrange was also quite good. Vocals were very warm and detailed. Guitar strings sounded extremely precise. These drivers seem ideally suited for jazz and rock.
Dave is a bit critical of the highs. But, I found them to be quite acceptable in my hour or so of audition time. They're not the $60/pair Vifa Neo's I've used in a few installs, but I'd give them a solid B in sound reproduction.
The stereo image and front soundstage were both good despite the drivers firing nearly into your knees. The tweets could have used a weeee bit better off-axis response, but this could be solved by angle-mounting them or mounting them a bit higher.
Bottom Line:
This is a very, very nice sounding component set and is screaming bargain for what Dave is charging. It is better than any coaxial I've heard. I'd equate it to a lot of mid level components I've heard in the $200-250 range.
I'm looking forward to putting in the custom crossover and bumping up the power to 80w per channel. My cousin (his truck) was absolutely amazed by the components.
