I have read similar posts (probably the same ones) myself. I had posted this topic on fordmondeo.org and there a comment was made to vent the rear of the box that surrounds the air filter. Lightly meaning, not wide open, but like slatted. If you really wanted to get fancy you could even set up something that looks like a window shade, several slats of plastic/metal that could be adjusted in time with the throttle, only backwards. When the throttle was full open, the slats would be shut so the air could only come in the intake hole and go in the engine, at 1/2 throttle the slats would allow half flow out into the engine compartment, and at low throttle/idle the slats would be wide open so the air would loose any forcing affect, thus preventing the engine from being flooded with air. The rain thing would have to be dealt with too, obviously.
