My moose encounter was much more fortunate than the lady's. I was driving one of my Merkur XR4Ti's to enter it in the All Ford Nationals in Carlisle, PA, in June 1998. I believe it was a situation where my natural trendency to speed actually helped me.
I was doing a little over 70 mph around a turn, late at night on the Airline Route (Highway 9 between Calais and Bangor, ME - one of the nicest driving routes in North America - right VividMystique). As soon as I saw the moose - an adult bull moose (full rack and all) I hammered the brakes, it was apparent I wouldn't stop in time so I let off the brakes and swerved around it. Unfortunately, he decided to follow the headlights and moved into my path, but I took his legs out right along the headlight area by the fender to hood edge. My speed was enough that the body and head didn't drop until it was past the windshield with the head hitting the roof of the car and the body hitting the passanger's side at the "B" pillar. Lucky me.
I did write my car off, a 1985 Merkur XR4Ti that I'd spent the previous winter doing a "down to the bare metal" buildup on

, but no one was hurt

- well the moose was killed

but Anna and I were fine

. In fact, while the car was a write-off for insurance purposes it was sort of OK to drive - two bent rims, one flat-spotted tire (no ABS), no right-side headlights or grille or side mirror, major dent in the fender and dented bumper and hood, etc., etc. Anyway, I convinced Anna (trooper that she is) to continue on to the car show - 1,800 Fords entered that year - and
we ended up taking the top prize at the show

I'm looking at the trophy now in my office and I won a set of rims as well.
You see the top prize doesn't go to the best car in the show but to the person who a) contributes the most to the show or b) goes through the most to get there. I've actually left alot out but we the moose ordeal was about 50%-75% of the hassle we went through to get there.
I wasn't going to enter the car after the accident but when a friend convinced me to I borrowed a yellow tire marker and wrote on the red fender
Ford 1 - Moose 0 . The car became a bit of a hit and all weekend people would come up yell out to my "hey MooseMan, come on over and tell my friend abiut your accident". It turned an otherwise miserable time into an very nice weekend.
I was lucky and so was that Chevy driver. Most people don't get to walk away from such encounters.
