Hi.
I doubt my 98 contour GL has a bad MAF sensor. Is there a way I can clean the sensor myself or have it checked?
The whole story is this car has been giving poor MPG around 17mi/gal. And lately the CEL was on (P1131). I replaced the O2 sensor but mpg is still low. I read some place online saying there's a good chance the MAF sensor is bad on this car.
Thanks!

Did you remove the negative battery cable for 20 minutes after replacing the O2 sensor?

Or pull fuse 4&11 which is a lot less work.

20 minutes is overkill too. 1 minute and the ECU is cleared. It's electriciy drain (extremely fast!) we're talking about here - not waiting for imaginery ECU-gnomes to fly out of the ECU!

You might want to make sure the MAF connectors are connected completely. I had that problem too, it turned out one of the clips for the wire thing was broken and the wire holder bit was half off. I had to get some zip tied to hold the thing on there.
Good Luck.

Thanks guys.
The sensor is mounted inside a metal cover. Should I take it out and clean it?
And I did disconnect the battery cable around 2 mins after replacing the O2 sensor. Maybe I ll try disconnecting a bit longer.
