Seperate the wires, then unhook the battery for 15 minutes to clear any codes. See what happens then.
IMO, if it is bad, then unplugging it from the engine would not have any affect on how the engine runs. Try it and see. Also, do a search in this forum and Zetec maintainance, there is a lot of talk about the VCT sensor.
