I have a 96 contour SE automoatic that does the same thing. It will not get out of first gear without manually doing it by putting it in second gear. The O/D light does eventually flash when it does this. It is an on and off thing, but the speedometer does not move at all if it is acting up.



tranny might not be leaving first gear because the speedometer does not move, ie it thinks the car is not moving

my rebuilt automatic tranny does something similar, i have never worried about it since it works fine otherwise, but if you put the selector in 1st the tranny acts as though it is in drive if the car is already moving, if you are at a stop and put it in first, it acts like it is half way between gears, and accellerates really slow, i think it is my range sensor on the fritz but havent replaced it yet to see, also aligned it and it still does this
