Ijust had a complete front brake job. The abs kicks in and sounds like rat a tat anyhing I can do?

Turn the ABS off by pulling any fuse/relay related to the ABS system, then the ABS/Traction Control lights come on, and if that bothers you, remove the lightbulbs from the instrument cluster. Then your ABS has been removed

I would be very surprised if your 96 GL has ABS. You probably need to have another look at the brake job. If the rotors were machined too agressively they could be "phonographed" or "threaded" so that the pads are chattering when braking.

Some do, ABS was hit or miss with most contours... My car has everything setup to have ABS/Traction control. But no Light for either one, or button for traction control. And not ABS Sensors at the wheels... While others that have 99 se sports have ABS but nothing for traction control. There is plenty of pre98 contours that did have ABS, I have been in a GL, and LX that both had ABS... My 95 SE had ABS also. Just some do some don't..... kinda more on the dealer who ordered the car then ford themselves.

JIM it has ABS brakes the light on the dash comes on and then goes off.

You really need to read the codes to see why the light is coming on. I would still have a good lock at the brake job since the problem started immediately after doing the front brakes.
