My car has approx. 147,000 miles on it. It is a 1999 SE Sport V6 w/ Automatic Transmission. Please read if you may be able to diagnose my car. Or with any help in finding me a new tranny, or maybe some opinion on my situation.

Well here is what happened: I was driving about 30- 40mph. My car started to hold back a little bit. I couldn't go any faster than 30mph or my car will start to jerk and almost sound like it would stall out. I tried to ride home at 30mph but I didn't make it. The car just started to rev up in Drive and would not go anywhere. I put it in 1 and it still would just rev up, I put it in 2 and same thing. So my friend and I put it in Nuetral and pushed it. A couple feet after pushing, the car started to catch a gear WHILE in Nuetral, so I hopped in and stepped on the gas a little. The car was DRIVING in Nuetral. I pulled into a parking lot and while all this was happening the O/D light was blinking on and off. The car would only go in Nuetral, so I thought I could make it home. I didn't even get out of the lot after it had started to just rev up. I couldn't even Reverse, it would just rev up in either PRND12. We tried to push the car in Nuetral again, but the brakes seemed like they had locked up or something in the ATX locked up. I tried everything to try to move it out of the drive-way of the parking lot.

Finally, we had called a tow truck and he pulled it on the flat bed easily. Once we brought it home, something was locked up and it wouldn't come off the bed. We used soap and water to slide the car off!! Oh it was a SAD SAD night for the Contour.

You guys don't think I would have to go and replace my transmission? I can run an OBD2 through it to see what codes pop up. I haven't changed my fluid either. Not sure about the previous owner. I bought this car almost 3 years ago. I also bought a transmission filter awhile back but never got around to replacing it. From what I read on the forums, I can't do it, huh?

Thanks for help in advance!! I greatly appreciate it.

It sounds like Phil is dead on. IIRC he's had to replace his MLP for similar reasons. If you replace the MLP (a cheap part) and it doesn't resolve the problem, then you might have more serious issues. However, trying a $35 fix is better than just assuming a $2500 fix.

You can try to hook up an OBD-II reader, but you most likely will not retrieve any codes. Worth a shot though.

If you've never changed your fluid, then you really need to. Do the 4 quart drop, as outlined in the CD4E FAQ in the tranny forums. Do not! I repeat! Do not perform a system flush right now! You can read alot more about that in the FAQ as well.

As for the filter, well no you cannot. Not without pulling the transmission and cracking it open.

If it popped in gear when in neutral, then the linkage is miss adjusted or bent. The linkage is directly connected to the manual valve. Unless the manual valve is in a drive position the electronic valves (controlled by the range sensor and PCM) can not activate the clutches and servos.
Jumping in and out of gear can also be caused by a bad range sensor or low line pressure.

My advice is to change the range sensor and in the process check the linkage for proper operation. Then if it still broke, check the line pressure. Save the fluid change and flushing for latter. It wonâ??t fix your problem.

Where is this MLP Sensor located? and how may I go about replacing it? If this doesn't work I will try to replace the Range Sensor.

Sorry for the confusion, itâ??s the same part. It is located on the top of the tranny with a electrical connector. The MLP(range sensor detects the position of the shift linkage. If you find the linkage you have found the sensor.
