Haven't been offered the second, and the first wants me to call em back w/ an answer either way. I know doing what I want is worth less money, especially since it is long term...
I can't accept the first and back out. The head of IT was supposed to put in a word for me, and if he did do that, I don't want to make him look bad. His mother-in-law is good friends with my mom, so, yea, that wouldn't go over too well.

Call the company you're waiting to hear from. Ask them about the status of your application & the availability of the position. Let them know that you have an offer elsewhere that pays more. Also tell them that you would prefer to work for them and why.
You may get an updated offer for more money at the place you really want to be.
That is how I came into my last 2 jobs - at a higher wage than the original offer.

Must be that jumbly-wumbly thing happening again.

I think they call that "having principals", something that pushed aside far to easily these days. Good for you Perry!

I contacted the 2nd place yesterday and mentioned that I may have some local opportunities for work but that I'd prefer to work for them. They had one interview to do yesterday and would be making a decision within a couple days I was told. Writing another email to the HR lady to tell her that I now have an offer and asking for advice on how to proceed.

If they do finally offer up the position go in FACE TO FACE, not on the telephone:
1. Thank them for the opportunity 2. Let them know how much you're looking forward to working there 3. then let them know about the higher offer & ask them if they'll meet it to offset some of the hassle/expense of re-locating.
They may go for it if their bottom line is not too tight, and/or if they're reasonable.
Must be that jumbly-wumbly thing happening again.

They're 300 miles away, tough to do.

It's a college....
I accepted the contract offer, start on Monday. Gotta fill out all the employment forms and fax em off. If the college gets me an offer, then I guess I'll have some thinkin to do.

So what you're saying is... the bottom line is always tight, and they're never reasonable...
Congrats on the job, I hope it works out for ya!

Exactly! They've thrown all their money in to cool network gear for me to play with, nothing left over to pay a good salary! But I wouldn't mind that one bit!
Oh well. Off to Kinko's to fax in my job offer acceptance and stuff. 45 mile one way commute here I come!

My Uncle says that when the lady asked me what was holding me back from accepting the offer yesterday that I should have said something about a higher salary. Hindsight is 20/20, but seeing how their offer wasn't in the salary range that I gave em, I doubt that would have worked.
It didn't work out, so it must not have been the job for me.
To make a long story short. A number of years ago, I interviewed a young man, just finishing college, for an entry level position. He was completely honest when making the appointment with me about other interviews. As this industry is very tight (everyone knows everyone) I knew my industry colleague had offered him a position. Simply based on his honesty, I hired him (after making him tell a dirty joke so I could be sure he'd fit in).
Skills that are lacking can always be learned but his integrity is simply invaluable. That was 7 years ago, he's now my right hand and Ops Director.
Am pleased you remained true to yourself. The RIGHT fit will come along.
