I just got beat out of a job today by a guy like you!!

It was at a performance engine rebuilder/machine shop. I knew, walking into the interview, that I did not really have the experience (current anyway) for the job, but it would be a great opportunity for me to get back into the mechanic's schene and the job would be just be plain fun. I mean come on, what would be better than building engines and installing them in hot rods all day 5 days a week!! Plus, I've only had two interviews in the past 2 months since I got laid off so I figured I had nothing to loose.

Anyway, I start talking with the guy and within 5 minutes he tells me that they are looking for someone with more experience. I politely tell him that I understand and make a comment about his rational reasoning, stand up to shake his hand and then he ask me, "So if you knew that you did not have the experience for the job, why did you come?". I start talking to him about how fun I thought the job would be and how I've always wanted a job like this... you know, that sort of stuff. Just plain relating to the guy. We ended up talking for about thirty minutes about all sorts of stuff and he says, "I tell ya what. Let me make a copy of your resume` and I will get back with you in a few days. How's that sound?" I tell him that he can have the resume, but for some unknown reason, he insists on getting a copy of it and letting me keep the original. We walk into the front office, to make the copy and wouldn't you know it... the copier goes out while one of the other employees was using it. Since worked for Xerox for the past 5 and half years, he looks and me says, "Well mister Xerox, do you think you can fix it?" Being very familiar with the machine and the problem it was having, I knew it was a goner'. I open it up and look at few things then told him that he could run back to Staple and buy a new one for less than what it would cost to fix this one. I again try to offer my original resume to him, but he still insists on a copy. This guy is plain anal!! "Ok!", I say. "I have a former customer a few miles down the road. I will go there, make you a copy and return with it." He says that would be great.

I return to a young man walking from the shop. He hops into an old beat up Mustang and drives off. I think to myself, "Must've been a customer." As I enter the office, the owner says to me, "Phillip, I am so sorry, but I had to hire that guy!" I of course replied, "Uh!". The owner of the shop continues, "Yeah, he has worked in his dads shop just about all his life. Plus, he just graduated from that community college over there and got some sorta degree or sumtin in machine shop. I really couldn't turn it down."

I was screaming inside, but on the outside, I smiled and handed him my copied resume. I told him that I completely understood, like I had said before. I then wished him the best of luck with his shop and new employee, turned and left. As I was getting in my car, the owner comes out and says, "Hey Phillip!. Look, call me in a few days. You never know, this guy might be a chump and not know a nut from a bolt. Would ya do that for me?" I told him, smiling of course, "If the guy doesn't work out, you call me. You have my resume. We will talk. If he does, then congradulations."

I do understand why he hired the guy though. I have not been a professional mechanic for over 7 years. So I don't have any hurt feelings.

Perry, as far as I'm concerned, you did the right thing. I wouldn't worry about it. I do hate it when people do that though. And sorry for hijacking. I had to get it off my chest.
