ive own a duratec and have been a member for almost 2 years now and never bothered to ask how the zetec works. can someoen break it down for me ?

I don't know how they work, either. I mean, I'd figure a motor would have to have at least enough power to turn over the crank, or it wouldn't be efficient enough to work.

HAHAHA. The zetec engine works by combusting gasoline, much like your duratec.

Zetec isnt like VTEC, if thats what your asking about. Its just a name.

isnt there some kind off variable timing mechanizm in the zetec engine? the VTC. i didnty mean the engine itself, i know how an dengien works.

They break down on their own quite nicely, thank you.
Seriously, great little engine: Iron block, non-interference, can take well over 10 psi of boost on stock internals if tuned properly. They're also used in the Cougar, Escort, Focus, and a few others I'm sure. Although the Focus Zetecs are a bit different (updated supposedly).
Overall, quite reliable. In my opinion better than the Asian alternatives just because it's a non-interference engine.
Must be that jumbly-wumbly thing happening again.

98+ zetecs have vct=variable cam timing. It's on the exhaust cam, and instead of acting like vtec to increase performance, it replaces EGR to help with emissions.
