I've got a compound bow, although that wasn't intended for home defense. However, if I did hear someone break in (or try to), I would reach for the bow....

Well see, now we're getting into interpretations of what we would do in the pursuit of "home defense". And that's OK...it varies from person to person. My goal, in my house at this time, would be simply to secure my loved ones in a defendable location, i.e. between our bed and the exterior wall, where the bed is between us and the door, call for help on a cellphone, and keep a weapon trained on the bedroom door or down the stairwell, depending. Anyone who appears in that doorway who hasn't already called out that they're cops (especially if there aren't flashing blue lights outside and/or dispatcher confirmation on the phone) dies. The end.
Other people need or want to be able to move through the household, maybe to get to their children or to protect something of particular value. In that case, a handgun might well be the better option. And I know of people who've got lots of land to cover, and they want to have a rifle on hand in case they need to engage a target at a distance.
But those are questions that you have to work out in your own mind before deciding that X or Y is the best tool for you.

Practice- 22's are like over grown BB guns. Fun to shot but don't get you prepared for the shock of a 9mm or especially a 45.
In Semi-Automatics- 9mm are cheap on ammo, good for target practice, and a good middle ground gun.
40cal or better for stopping power. I'm partial to 45's.
In Revolvers 357 or 44mag are the only way to go. And they are more relieable and easy to use than a semi auto. i.e. you don't have to think as much especially with dual action.
If you wife has any interest, train her. Shooting is lots of fun and most women aren't as scared of them after they've been to the range and learned the basics. My mother went 180 on them after going to the range with my dad once. And my girlie can't wait for me to take her. 9mm is about the biggest a woman can be comfortable with.

The problem with America is stupidity.
I'm not saying there should be a capital punishment
for stupidity, but why don't we just take the safety
labels off of everything and let the problem solve itself?

Some guys tried to break into my house while I was home a couple years back. They managed to get into the garage and I heard 'em talkin so I called the fuzz. I reckon they were laughing at my car, and they left without taking anything. My home defense: crappy cars in the driveway.
