A handgun is not the ideal weapon for home defense. It should only be used to make your way to your stash of long guns.

In my opinion, a shotgun loaded with buckshot is the best home defense weapon.

I disagree... I do have Remington 12ga, though I have slugs in it rather than buckshot (can't use the buckshot on the range), but fwiw, I prefer my Smith & Wesson .45 for home defense. Its much more mobile than my 870, I can keep it on the stand next to my bed, or even under my pillow if I'm feeling paranoid enough, rather than in a closet or under my bed.

More importantly, I can level and fire half my clip on the .45 in the time it takes me to pump, level, aim, fire, and pump my shotgun once. One guy in your house, if you're a good shot its a tossup, but I've got 4x the chance of hitting him than you do... but what about two people in your home?? How do you get one shot off, then quickly get over to the second? For that, a handgun is much easier, and thats why I prefer my .45 over my 12ga.

Though there is certainly something to be said for the sound of pumping a shotgun... scariest sound in the world.

As an aside, I primarily use my Sig 9mm (along with JaTo, IMO a GREAT gun... Sigs are amazing) when I carry (I do have my ccp). Its smaller, lighter, holds more rounds, and has a great trigger action. My only complaint is that it doesn't have a safety, and I'm always a little leery about carrying a gun in the back of my pants or on a shoulder/hip holster that could potentially go off when I don't want it to. I also have 2 .357 mags and a .38 special, but those guns are just too brash for me. The .38 is nice, small and simple, but too rough compared to the silky smooth, light recoil, semi-automatic buttery goodness of my Sig or the .45.
