I haven't tried the biometric safe like the one I posted, but I've played with the pressure plate models where you key in a sequence with your fingers. I got the one I played with down almost as fast as yanking a gun out of a holster underneath the bed...

My boss has a Bull Mastiff. He's geting a little older, but he still weighs in around 160lbs. My boss can use his collar as a belt. As for someone saying a dog would attack a kid instead, that's why you train them. Like the police do, pick words from a foreign language or something like that. Maybe the police have it right. Get a shot gun, a hand gun, a dog, some pepper spray, a beater stick AND some backup!

Dogs are also a good way to go as I have a pair of Daschunds which have turned out to be amazing backup alarms for the house. Don't laugh, but I've had my little Daschund female of 16 lbs. chase after a 100lb. Black Lab when it came into our garage one afternoon. It was astonishing to see the degree of protectiveness they have in them, even though all they would make for an intruder is a nice football.

Regardless, they are EXCELLENT backup alarms. If something goes "bump" in the house or even around it and within earshot, they start barking and immediately tear off towards the noise.

Finally, security should be done in layers. Motion cameras, a house alarm, dogs and a sidearm make a complete package. My dogs are a joke compared to a trained Doberman, but they've unintentionally managed to round out the package. You'd be surprised what you can do with a fairly small amount of money. I did a video surveillance system around my house a while back that ran a touch over a grand (Come to think of it, I did get a very steep discount, though. Bad example, maybe). With the cheapo WiFi cams these days, one could probably bang together a system for a third of that.

Heck, well-placed and highly visible dummy cameras will scare off 90% of the thieves out on the prowl, though there's always that 10% that either doesn't care or is whacked out of their minds on something.

That's what the rest is for...
