Use Buckshot rounds, not rifled slugs. You want to be able to do serious damage but balance that against the possibility that one of your shots will exit your house and penetrate a neighbor's house and cause injury to the innocent (potentially major lawsuit).

I guess you're forgetting the jail-time you'll get for having an illegal firearm and the likely civil lawsuit for Wrongful Death if you shoot someone with that sawed-off.

I liked this piece of advice too...not.

The flash of the shotgun will briefly illuminate the room/intended target (assumes it is night time) and hopefully guide your next shot.

OK, you count on that. I'll count on a forearm-mounted Surefire flashlight.

My home defense plan:

Must be that jumbly-wumbly thing happening again.

I've never been a fan of handguns for home defense, especially when you have just waken-up.

I dunno about you, but when/if I'm woken up by someone breaking into my house, I grab my gun (whatever it may be), and am fearing for my and my family's lives, I'm not exactly feeling a little groggy from just waking up.

If you can't trust your ability to shoot straight and compensate by buying a gun with a bigger spread, I sure as hell hope I'm not around come time for you to shoot.

you may think so, but how many times have you fired when in that state? ZERO. and buckshot (in a LEGAL) shotgun is going to be a far better repellent, and more likely to hit the perp.

i hope you're not too.

fact of the matter is, everyone is going to have different preferences. i prefer to know that when i shoot, it's not going to go through the perp or the walls into other rooms. if there is someone (that i don't want shot) behind the perp, i'm not shooting anything. i will wait until i have a cleaner shot and a better tactical advantage.

Well, what everyone seemed to neglect is the fully trained German Shepard, like one weighing in around 130 pounds and wearing a Kevlar vest.

<img src="http://vestadog.com/images/davethompson.jpg">

To take it to the extreme, have two such dogs in your home. When an intruder enters your home and wanders through the darkened hallways, he will attacked (possibly) from different directions at high speed. Given the speed & power of a German Shepard in close quarters, a home invader would have only time to kill one of the dogs and this would require a direct headshot. The other dog would take him down.

Problem solved.

I don't have a gun, and I don't know much about them. But I'm thinking about getting one. If some spaced-out scumbag breaks in to my house, I have to be able to protect my family.

How do I make sure the gun isn't used against ME if I come home and surprise a burglar in the house? How do I keep it quickly accessible to me but not to kids, burglars, etc?

I completely agree. I'm not anti-gun at all, but with a dog you aren't going to shoot or hurt the wrong person. I've seen how protective a 60lb. dog can be. I can only imagine one that is twice the size. Is there training for dogs? If not, that would be a good idea. It would be hard though. With people saying the dogs would become more aggresive with the wrong people, etc.

Would a dog recognize a criminal as being a threat? Most dogs will chase anything that runs from them. That can be a danger to children and some adults. I like dogs but they will chase anything.

Most people are murdered by someone they know. I have read that most of the time the victim knows the person who murdered them. They know the person so they open the door for them.

The right dog (German Shepherd being one of the better breeds) will be MUCH more effective at home defense than any gun.
