i'm on my way home from work and as i turn into the subdivsion i see the local news trucks at the top of the hill. a couple houses down there's a house cordoned off with yellow tape. so i stop to talk to the neighbors across the street and find out the owner had been shot - car (mercedes C230) missing. he hadn't been seen since friday and when he missed work today a coworker came by the house and found the body.

right now the circumstances around his death aren't clear, but the first thing i did when i walked in the house was take inventory of ammo. this is a tragic situation but the first thing that came to my mind was defending my family and home. that's just too much to lose.

i have a home security system and two handguns but feel like i need more. both guns are 9mm. glock - 2nd gen G19 16rounds mag. makarov - russian made 9x18 8rounds mag. i have my ccw and i'm pretty competent at the firing range but haven't been in a couple months, plus i'm concerned about the stopping power of a pistol. i'd like to get something with more grunt. i've been putting it off for a while but now is a better time than ever. you guys have any reccomendations?

A 9mm hollowpoint, 147 grain shot will have plenty of stopping power. Unless the perp is hyped up on something hardcore, that will stop anyone in their tracks. If you are worried about it though, just get a damn 12g shotgun.

I bet the person who shot him was someone that lives closeby that knew him. Probably a friend that needed drug or alcohol money.

I used to have a 9mm Smith & Wesson that would jam too often. I like a 357 or 44 magnum revolver because they never jam and they have good knock down power. If shooting inside the noise will probably stun the person enough to stop them.

A shotgun is the best home defence weapon, bar none.

9mm isn't bad at all, as I've got a Sig 228 that I keep loaded with Hydra-Shoks. A human head has the consistency of a head of cabbage and I've made cole-slaw out of a few at the gun range with the Sig.

A good ol' .45 is probably the best "manstopper" out there in a pistol, though. I've got better control over the 9mm and .380 I have, so they stay out of the gun safe and on duty. I'd play around with a .40 S&W and a few .45s, though, just to compare. I like a .45 better than a .40, but that's just me (and I think it's had to do with the guns I've shot in both more than the round itself)...

I'm a recoil wuss and want as much shot control I can get, though. The Sigs have it in spades for the rounds they push. The only 45's that I've shot that were better were comp'd guns and would break the bank...

I own a number of brands of pistols but I've got a shameless love affair with Sig Sauer going on and I don't think it's going to end anytime soon. Take a look at their 226 line, as they pack .40 and .45 in a nice frame that just won't quit.

Trade in one of those pistols on a Mossberg 500 series or a Remington 870 and a flashlight forearm and get yourself to a range. Get proficient and work out your home defense plan (i.e. hole up in the bedroom if the alarm goes off or pop out to the hallway or stairway landing). IMHO, the only reason you should even bother using that pistol in a home situation is to cover yourself while you get to your shotgun.

exactly along the lines i was thinking. i've had the home defense planned out, but adding the mossberg would seem to make shot accuracy less of an issue. i plan on taking a closer look this weekend.

one of the metro area gun shop resells them from surplus and refurbished stock. i've found it to be very reliable and compact but heavy.

I agree. I hope I never have to use my .45, but if I do, Im sure 1 or 2 shots is all I would need. Im pretty good with it too Although the sound of a pump shotgun being cycled is probably enough to make anyone want to leave in a hurry.

Ammo is too expensive for me though. Im thinking of getting one of those .22 conversion kits to play around shooting targets with.
