The S-AFC is designed for Cars using a "Speed Density" calibration system which doesn't use a MAF. (typical Honda, Nissan, Toyota, etc...) From what I have gathered from various tuners using this on a MAF equipped car like a DSM turbo, the S-AFC doesn't read the MAF signal correctly at idle causing a rough idle. Stazi (being a former DSM owner) can probably elaborate a little better then me.

In the set up, you get to choose from a pressure system (MAP) or a hot wire set up (MAF). Once this is chosen, I don't see how it could mess it up. There are some DSM web pages on how to get a basic set up using this piece as well, I forgot to bookmark that page... guess some more searching is in order again... now what did I search for last time... hummmmmmmm...

All the big DSM tuners (Road/Race Engineering etc..) think that the S-AFC is pretty swell, according to their website. They even provide starting tuning points for DSM cars w/different mods...
The S-AFC technical documents are on APEXi's web site, including wiring diagrams, and all the technical info one might need in order to hook it up, yo. Try the link at the top of the post for more info.
And yes, one has been hooked up and works very well on a local Mustang here in Denver! This should work for Contours...

The DSM guy's that had trouble with the idle are trying to use blow off valves that dump into the atmosphere. DSM's ARE MAF controled, with a MAF system the blow off valve MUST dump back into the system after the MAF. With a Speed Density system you can blow off into the atmosphere.

That might be what I am thinking of.
It looks like I might be looking into getting one sooner then I had hoped.. I changed my plugs lastnight and the white/tan carbon on the electrodes is proof enough that I am not getting enough fuel. Time for bigger injectors & the S-AFC... maybe some other goodies along the way. -Mark

I am pretty sure my cougar is running rich, ever since I gutted the precats my car has more soot coming out and smells really bad at wide open throttle. I have been looking around but none of the magazine adds really specify if the AFC is universal or not. Will I need to use a dyno to adjust my AF controller then? Can't I just do it my self.
Thanks, Chris

Thanks, Chris Yes, go to a shop that has experience with the S-AFC and it'll be fine. The other part of the discussion would be for the majority of the do it yourselfers out there in CEG land.

The DSM ECU cannot hanlde atmosphere dumps as it has already ":counted" the air coming in and on shifts the dumped air dramatically decreases the A/F ratio (richer) and causes the engine to stumble. The DSM's use a Karman Vortex type of MAF. It counts eddies in the airflow to calculate the mass of air entering the engine. The Apex S-AFC is compatible with different types of Air Flow meters, I just hope that the Ford style is one of them. I am thinking it should work. Give it a try Mark. I wish I still had mine!
