Has anyone tried one of these piggyback fuel computers before? Though they cater primarily to imports, their website lists a universal application. My friend has the vtec AFC in his prelude and it seems to work well.

It's a badass looking little toy. Looks pretty simple to install, only a few wires to splice into the computer (well, not simple, but not rocket science after you figure out the wires going to the computer). Then head down to your friendly dyno shop and get it tuned.

Quick web search brings up all sorts of good things to say about it. Lots of guys with upgraded turbo cars with em. I saw it going for $320 on www.groupbuycenter.com the other day. A Yahoo search brought up buy from back in April for $295..

I mentioned it to Tim, telling him it was one gadget that he didn't have and would look cool.. He didn't bite.

www.dynamicturbo.com lists the SAFC for $299 with the subtitle "we will not be undersold" I know that this will make more power! It's like the MAF optimizer, just way, way, more adjustable and with many other features. I've been eyeing one up for quite some time. Once the next round of mods goes on the car (65mm TB and Big MAF) the SAFC will go on for fuel tuning along with the 100k IAT pot for timing control. Bwaahahah... (evil laugh)

If anyone does this mod, PLEASE post a how-to. Every shop I've called has practically laughed at me when I ask about the universal model for our car.

Typical phone call:
me: Do you carry the apex-i universal AFC?
them: yes.
me: Can you install it in a '98 contour?
them: (muffled laughter) Are you serious?

TIA

Followed by "Listen prick, my money's just as green as anyone elses. Besides the fact that I put down more power to the wheels than most of those Hondas have at the crank. Now what are you going to throw in for free to earn my respect back?" cough cough, daydream over...

Find a respectable shop... The install isn't the hard part, the instructions are fairly easy to follow as long as you have a Ford manual to find all of the wires on the 'tour. The hard part is in the tuning, which will be individual for every car and must be done on the dyno because the car's sensors are not "wide band" enough to be able to set this thing up without risking engine damage. Using someone else's setting should only be a starting point from which to dyno tune to be correct for your car.

I talked to the "tuning wizard" at my local dyno shop and he said it would be no problem to install one on our cars. All he would need would be the wiring diagram from the service manual and about 2 hours. He's installed one on a late model mustang succesfully and he'd like to try one on a Duratec. So it should work OK.

Anyone bite on this one yet? I'm thinking REALLY hard to switching to one since my motor is pretty modified from stock and I don't think the air/fuel mixture is anywhere near what it should be. Also my adjustable fuel pressure regulator as I'm told is NOT the way to go. I'm thinking this would be a GREAT monitor for Nitrous/Boost applications and should make tuning with a decent set of gauges and sensors pretty straight fwd. I would also think that this is a MUST for 3.0 Tour guys and supercharged guys, Mark YOU LISTENING?

Very very very interesting. Looked at it the other day, thanks to Blorton.

$299 isn't too bad, considering you will have great adjustability features.

Beats buying a Motech or Haltech computer for $Xk.

Anybody wanna give it a shot? If it works well, it's on my list after I do the headers.

John
