I have an A.A. in general studies and am currently working on getting my B.S. in CMIS from UMUC.

after I finish getting that I will try to figure out what I want to do with my life I guess.

U of M is University of Maryland, there are many schools who make up this system. UMUC, is just one of the schools. UMUC caters to working people. They have satellite campuses around MD. Most classes are available classes on-line or they meet once a week. I am 4 semesters away from a CMIS degree from UMUC. Also, I have A.S. from AACC in CS.

I graduated from UMUC, and so glad I went there instead of CP. (I've never been a "party" atmosphere person.)

As Susie stated, UMUC is mostly working adults, but is starting to see an influx of younger students. I can't imagine what my GPA would have been going to CP, but the working adult atmosphere is pretty serious and forced me to do well. (Graduated with a 3.75).

If you want more details, I can talk to you next time we meet at the pub.

Actually the only University that can call it self just University of Maryland is UMCP (College Park)

But the different UM are not related to each other in any way other than the name. UMUC is completelly seperate from UMBC or UMCP. (but UMUC has it's headquarters real close to UMCP )

All the different University of Maryland colleges are under the University System of Maryland (USM) http://www.usmd.edu/Overview/ for an overview of the University System of Maryland.

"The University System of Maryland (USM) is Maryland's system of public higher education. Its members include all public colleges and universities in the State, with the exception of Morgan State University and St. Mary's College. In addition to its 11 colleges and universites, the USM also includes two research institutions."

There used to be a nice webpage going into the difference between UMCP and UMUC but it is not up anymore.

UMUC offers a much smaller ranges of degree programs geared to working people. You can't get a chemistry or Architecture degree there. They have satelite campuses over in Germany and you can get a full degree online.

UMCP is a full fledged University with a very wide variety of Degree programs and schools.

Andy W. The problem with America is stupidity. I'm not saying there should be a capital punishment for stupidity, but why don't we just take the safety labels off of everything and let the problem solve itself?

I got my A+. Havent really been out looking for a job. I mostly do freelance junk. Like teaching old people how to use these new fangled pc's for $50 an hour.

It pays the rent, and I might actually start my own home buisness soon once I get a bigger customer base. Put up a free add up in a Shoppers or something, "Learn How To Build Your Own PC, Never Pay Retail Again!!!" Something along those lines.

That may be true, but he did get his foot in the door. Once he's worked there for a year or so, he could probably move to a better position within the company, depending on his ability to learn and adapt, or even move on to another company who is willing to pay more.

Would it be safe to assume your resume is on monster.com and the other job sites? If not, get it there quick. In this area, most of the IT jobs are Government and Government Contracting positions. Most of them do require a secret security clearance of some sort. There are companies out there willing to sponsor the right canidate for a security clearance.

If I were in your position, I would get my resume out to as many places as possible and if offered a job, but the hours are crappy and the pay is not on par with the market standard, I would take it. Apply for every postion that you are interested in. Even though you do not meet the qualifications. What's the worse that could happen? They say "no".

I know in the past, when I was interviewing someone for a sysadmin position, I could care less what their educational background was. I know plenty of degree carrying admins who just do not have a clue about how UNIX and some of it's standard application work and interact. Don't get me wrong, having a degree is a great thing and shows your ability to work at something and finish it. However, as you found out, it's pretty useless without the experience.

I know you do not have any experience in the IT field. However, if your resume doesn't make you look like you the type of person who can; learn on the job, someone who is proactive, has a positive attitude, the willingness to learn and do whatever it takes. You can pretty much kiss all IT jobs good-bye. Remember, your resume is your first impression to the folks reading it. You have to make everything you do, no matter what it is, seem bigger than it really is. I am not telling you to lie. Just make everything you do seem like it is important.
