This is weird, I always thought O/D would drop the rpms to save on gas, but with O/D on (doesn't matter the speed, be it 40, 50, 60, 70) it jumps the rpms by almost 2 grand
anyone know what this could be?
in the "off position" it will not be lit up on the cluster right?
I'm trying to see if this is normal or not
thanks

O/D is on by default when you start the car. When press the button, you turn it off. You will see the green "O/D Off" indicator on the dash. If the light is on, O/D is off.

so It should be on all the time right? if you wanted to "play" you'd turn it off by hitting the switch, which would, intheory give you a little more power no? thanks

No, not really. On the CD4E, when you turn off O/D, all you're really doing is preventing the ATX from being in 4th gear (causing it to downshift to 3rd if it is already in 4th). IIRC, my Ford Service Manual says that the TC stays locked in O/D off mode as well. I'm at work so I can't check that, though.

So would it be better just to turn off O/D if you are driving in the city? Speed = 40mph?

I wouldn't recommend turning off O/D unless you're in a situation where the ATX will "hunt" for a gear. For example, there's a long uphill onramp on my way home that has a stoplight at the beginning. If I leave O/D on while I climb up to 60mph, the car will often times up/downshift between 3rd and 4th because of the incline. I turn off O/D until I get up to speed, then switch it back on.
Maybe Phil or someone else can comment on this, but I think that leaving O/D off during normal driving will probably result in higher temps in the ATX, which isn't good considering its propensity to overheat to begin with. Plus the TC really needs to lock/unlock when appropriate; forcing it to be locked constantly couldn't be good for it.

i by all means don't know much about the AT but I read in the owners manual for my mothers windstar it suggests turning OD off around town, I beleive it says this since you do not need over drive in this situation, plus this will give you more acceleration then if you let OD kick in
I can't see how not using OD can be bad, the 90's tempos only had 3 speed autos

When I play the O/D is off.....don't like it going into O/D when I let off the gas!
