I posted up a Tread and I showed a pic with an arrow pointing to the VCT. At that point I had no idea what it was for. My Question Now is on the wiring. Recently the car has been staling as soon as it is put into gear. Even when in park and idling it sounds like its missing. I changed the plugs and there was no change but while changing the plugs I came across the VCT sensor and I looked closer and the POS and Neg Wires were bare and the were touching. So I grabed some electrical tape and I covered the two touching wires. I fired up the car and still no change. Could the Wires touching be the culprit. Could the touching of the wire have burned the sensor. This IS THE VCT SENSOR RIGHT? I have a 98 contour gl Zetec 2.0

Seperate the wires, then unhook the battery for 15 minutes to clear any codes. See what happens then.
IMO, if it is bad, then unplugging it from the engine would not have any affect on how the engine runs. Try it and see. Also, do a search in this forum and Zetec maintainance, there is a lot of talk about the VCT sensor.
you have mail.

Found this in another thread, might help you out. Originally posted by SteveCEG: Yip, you are right, code 1380 is electrical to the VCT. Try a quick check of the electrical contacts on the VCT (there are two of them). You should be getting somewhere between 3 and 6 ohm. If it is higher (the one I replaced on mine was showing 9K), the VCT solenoid is shot.
If the VCT resistance is OK, you might want to try a flush, and an oil change.
Let me know how it goes.

There is no VCT sensor. That is the wiring to the VCT solenoid.
A signal from the PCM to the VCT solenoid changes exhaust cam timing at higher RPM.
If the VCT mechanism is stuck, you will get a code.
P1380 VCT Solenoid Valve circuit Short or Open. P1381 Cam Timing Advance is excessive. P1383 Cam Timing Advance is excessive.
Stalling issues are usually from mixture and/or low idle.

Thank you for telling me what that is. My question is that if the two wires that connect to it if they touched together and stayed together would that fry it.

The PCM output is protected, still it can go bad.
The VCT solenoid would not be affected. Engine heat kills them.
