One day last week when I was driving home, it suddenly felt like not all of the power from the engine was transmitted to the wheels...

( Even if I pressed the accelerator, the engine would rev up but the car wouldn't move faster )

Thinking that the transmission might be busted ( as it happened with my previous car , an old Olds 88 junker ), I pulled over and checked the transmission fluid. That was ok, as I had that changed just a couple days before that.

I got back in my car , and I was prepared to try to drive it home, even with the problem.

Funny thing is, it didn't do it anymore, and hasn't done it since?

What could it have been?

i am assuming you have an auto since you said you pulled over and checked the fluid level, the power loss could have been cause by the torque convertor sliping excessively, if that was happening the O/D OFF light will flash, meaning that the PCM has detected a problem with the transmission, and there is a code to be read. you need to get a tranny shop to read the code unless you have a code reader that you can drive around with hooked up, and when the light flashes, read the code then, these codes are not stored in memory

Tranny codes are stored in the memory. My O/D light used to flash, but would not come on again after I shut off the car. My CEL came on while scanning for it I got the tranny code from the O/D off light PO731 along with the other code.
So yes O/D off light blinking codes are stored in the memory.

From the `98 Ford Service CD -
"The MIL is illuminated for all emissions related electrical component malfunctions. For malfunctions attributable to a mechanical component (such as a clutch, gear, band, valve, etc.), some transmissions are capable of not commanding the mechanically failed component and providing the remaining maximum functionality (functionality is reassessed on each power up)- in such case a non-MIL Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will be stored and, if so equipped, a Transmission Control Indicator Light (TCIL) will flash."

What this basically means, is that the CEL will illuminate, and stay that way, during an emmissions related electrical component faliure or malfunction. That is until the PCM memory is either cleared manually or the fault is not detected after two consecutive drive cycles.

If there is a mechanical failure, in the tranny, it will cause the TCIL (O/D light) to flash, which means that the PCM has stored a code indicating which fault it was. But!! This code will be cleared once the engine is turned off.

So. If your O/D light flashed, there was a code there to be read. If you turned your engine off before you could actually read that code, that code would disappear. If when you started your car again and the CEL was not on or the O/D light did not flash, there is nothing there to read. You will have to wait until the fault happens again.

Hince the mass confusion that we have all had over this issue.

The O/D didn't flash...

However, my CEL is on all the time ( something my mechanic couldn't figure out ), since I got the car...

go to Autozone and have the code pulled for free. then bring that information back here and let's see what we can do for ya.

Is this problem related to the speedometer at all?

I have a 96 contour SE automoatic that does the same thing. It will not get out of first gear without manually doing it by putting it in second gear. The O/D light does eventually flash when it does this. It is an on and off thing, but the speedometer does not move at all if it is acting up.

tranny might not be leaving first gear because the speedometer does not move, ie it thinks the car is not moving

my rebuilt automatic tranny does something similar, i have never worried about it since it works fine otherwise, but if you put the selector in 1st the tranny acts as though it is in drive if the car is already moving, if you are at a stop and put it in first, it acts like it is half way between gears, and accellerates really slow, i think it is my range sensor on the fritz but havent replaced it yet to see, also aligned it and it still does this
