OK I don't want to hijack but since the discussion has turned to transmissions ... could a bad throw out bearing cause a stiff, squeaky clutch pedal and a loud rattle when the clutch is released in neutral?

Umm look a few posts up Todd I said that already

thanks for the info guys, i just got my car about 4 months ago and as far as i can see it's in really good shape. it only has 36,000 miles on it now and its a 98. im just worried mainly about the trans because i know it already shifts hard into second now and i just don't want to break nothing as soon as i get the turbo installed . im planning on getting a stage 2 or 3 clutch intalled and an LSD+ a lightweight flywheel, new motor mounts and a european handaling kit to start+ exahust. after doing research i think that should be enough to last for a good while untill im ready to go all out with it and make 400+hp (after im done with school). but again im glad u guys could give me the more experienced look that i needed. thanks again

You have pre-00 pistons. If you go over 6-7 psi you may break the ring lands.
I'm thinking take yourself to the 3L conversion forum. If you haven't had a turbo car before you will be more than happy with a 3L contour. You can learn a lot more about the car and engine and you can make that car compete with any late model v6 sedan on the market right now. Afterwards you can upgrade that motor to a turbo if you still find you want more power and want to keep the car. Take it in steps and you will get more use out of the car, learn more and probably enjoy it more.

The one time I had a throw out bearing it would make a whirring sound when I'd let the clutch out and it was in nuetral. So yes, that sounds like a throw out bearing going bad. Don't know about the squeaky clutch though.
