Well finally got the car back from the ford dealer. They checked the VCT and said all was ok. The lack of power and misfires I got came from a slipped timing belt. Lesson learned. It's kind of stupid that a timing belt wont last past 90K. But I'd suggest following the Ford rec and replacing it at 60 or is it 80K. I've been using Rotella T 5-40 Synthetic in this engine and it's so clean that I doubted the VCT could have been fouled by dirty oil. Thanks guys for all your input to my original post that started this whole thread. Your the best. Now it's time to do some more preventive matainence - I wanna drive this car till the wheels fall off. Thanks agian, TD

NVS: i changed mine at 150 000 kms ( i think around there anyways) and it was cracked and barely had any teeth left, you should probably get it changed or atleast checked out, i think that you have to change at around 80 000 kms

Here is the funny part, I got it checked at 220,000km and the guy was shokced because when he took it off he said it wasn't stretched and it looked like it was brand new and that puzzled him. BUt now that I got my Unothodox Racing cam gear(thanks to Chris from CTA) I will go get my timing belt belt repelced Anyone know how many degrees I can advance the timing on it?

I think advancing past 5 degrees isn't gonna help you any. I don't think you'll do damage with full advance, but it won't run good. I would just try two or three degrees of advance. You need another cam gear though,, too bad about that VCT crap.

i can tellyou here in the great land of the USof a it cost me 600.00 to have it replaced not 27$ and some odd change. that might be what the connector costs but not the solenoid. nobody is going to tear into your motor and remove the cam to get the VCT solenoid off and only charge 27.00. not at 75.00 per hr. labor. and they had my car for three days. the solenoid alone costs close to 300.00. and you can only get it from FORD.

dont use Champion Double Plats... I put then in my Zetec, they were great for about a week, then I was getting onto the expressway, Floored it... Shifted to 5th gear.. and I got misfires like CRAZY. I had cracked one of the plugs... Head over to autozone, get Motorcraft part number 417FE spark plugs... or Autolite Double Platinums... I had the Autolites, and I got misfires also. but thats only in a rare case for a zetec. Once I went to the motorcrafts I have smooth sailing.
Sorry if im going to sound like a n00b right now... but what does the VCT do exactly? I know it was on the Zetec after 98+ (right?)
