Today I finally completed one of my longest awaited mods - the relocation of the IMRC box. After months of problems with intermittent and then non existing secondaries I came to the conclusion that it was heat causing the trouble. I've read about people trying and suggesting all kinds of methods of getting cool air to this unit but none seemed to work.
After looking at it I realised that there was no way that a cold air feed or a fan etc could make any difference, as the imrc has no holes or vents to let air in to circulate around the internal components, and also that the outer body could not be cooled due to the fact that it is bolted straight onto the top of the engine.
After looking around the engine bay I decided to move it to the gap between the left strut turret and the bulkhead. That is the ideal position for it as the air in that area is always cool, and the control cable can be routed to the LIM without any sharp bends and fits near perfectly with no slack. I had to extend the wiring a fair bit but that wasn't difficult.
I also resoldered the circuit board inside the IMRC and replaced a to220 npn transistor which has now been proven to be faulty.
Now the secondaries open everytime, and the car will pull cleanly and strongly to the redline with no problems. Only time will tell if this has been worthwhile, but the initial results are good.
I will be posting a How-to on this job in the content section at the front of
www.fordmondeo.org in the next week or so for anybody who is interested in trying it.
