I've waxed, polished, and detailed tons of cars and when I went ot rub some spots out of my car this weekend I found that when using a light compound followed by a swril remover and polish, the rag would turn black, the color of my car. I have never seen this happen before and I know I can't be getting in to the paint just yet. Could it be possible that I am just burning the wax off under the spot I am polishing? I also have about 7 coats of pure carnuba wax and 2 coats of the new eagle one nano wax on their currently. All the work that caused the problem was done by hand so I am at a loss for ideas.

Either youve buffed through the wax or perhaps the car has been repainted with single stage paint which is where the paint and clearcoat are sprayed together.

It's a stock paint job though so are those one stage?

If you had actually gone through the clear, the area where you have the black transfer to your rag would be much duller than the rest of the paint. It would be damn near impossible to go through the clear doing things by hand, you'd have to use a rotary buffer and even then you'd have to do something wrong to burn through.

www.paintscratch.com says that the Black Ebony on 99 Contours is a basecoat/clearcoat paint.

Silly question, but are you sure you just weren't near some of the black trim?

no it was actually on the real quarter panel of the car and a small spot on my hood did the same thing but I found that the guy i baught it from had the hood repainted after an accident but the quarter panel is stock.

The basecoat, under the clearcoat, really has no shine to it. So if you had gone through the clear it would be really obvious.

Single stage paints don't have clear, so your polishing pad will sometimes pickup some of the color of the paint. That would be normal. But, I'm perty sure the black is clearcoated. Maybe someone else knows different. A call to 1-800-FORD-SVT may help verify.

What polishes and such were you using?

I used the 3M Prefect-IT fine cut and then a meguiars swirl remover. That's what was showing up with the black. The paint should be clearcoated so I think it may have been the wax coming off also. Then I used a meguiars polish and eagle one nanowax and did not get any color on the towel.

Dont trust the fact that the guy has never had more work done than he knows about. My bud just bought a brand new caddy catera cts. the whole rear end is starting to peel. It has been repainted and the color match sucks.The caddy dealer said they didnt do it...but the car was sold to them..so they were lying or the factory f*cked it up.

that fine cut stuff is just lower strength rubbing compound. the black u r getting is the oxidized paint. make sure you wax after using that. the heavy cut cleaners remove wax, oxidized paint, pretty much anything
