I heard that there was an upgrade for it, but I've never heard of one going bad. Maybe they're just not old enough yet.

I don't know how you can tell if the stab-o-shock needs to be replaced.
If you are having engine "problems" that might lead you to believe it's the stab-o-shock, it could be/also be the motor mounts.

The Stab-o-shock reduces a little of the drivetrain oscillation. It's effect is pretty minor really.
Adding the ES roll resistor insert would be a more effective way of reducing lash.
Filled mounts a much greater effect yet.
Each with a rising trade off - road feel verses NVH.

The shock itself is like any other type of shock.
If it is leaking or if the shocks's bound or rebound strength is bad. Then the shock is bad.
It is easy to change.
