I have a '99 Contour witch just turned over 100k miles and have several issues I'm trying to figure out.

1st The Contour has a 15gal tank but I find once the fuel is at about 1/4 of a tank it starts acting as thoe it's out of gas and will even die unless I put gas in it. But when I fill it will top off at only 10-11 gallons. I have drained the fuel tank and replaced the fuel filter. That only seemed to solve the problem for the first 2 tanks and now it back to the same issue.

2nd Sometime's when idleing the car has a sudden burst of power. If the car is stopped at a light and you don't STAND on the brake, the car will jerk forward. If your in Park the car just shakes. This sudden burst will happen about every 5 seconds and will start out of the blue and end just as quick. And of course it stop's before I ever reach a shop to have it checked.

3rd I'm having the same problem as Joe (No power, something's EFFed, dealer can't find)with the sudden loss of power. Everything he has done to try and fix the problem (plugs, timing, trannie, fuel system) is where I was going before reading his posting.

Thank's,
Tim

Fuel Pump all the way!!!!!

Mine left me on the HWY with 4.5 gallons left in the tank
It sputtered on more than 1/2 throttle we i got to less than 1/2 tank of gas

OH YEAH AND BTW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WHY IS THE COUGAR FUEL PUMP ASSY RECALLED BUT OUR 'TOUR PUMP ISN'T? IT'S THE SAME PUMP!! The only place in my area that actually had the pump in stock was a Mercury dealership for that reason.

I had a very similar problem. I was 99% convinced that it was the fuel pump, but it turned out a tranny problem. I ended up completely rebuilding the tranny [ATX]. Definetly have a mechanic look at it - it's much better and cheaper to deal with such problems early.
