Welcome to CEG!
We get a lot of that around here.
Check the water pump! They tend to die on their own, and certainly will when overheated. If the impeller is broken, backflush to get the small pieces out.
It would be a good idea to get a metal-impeller pump, new thermostat, and belt. Then refill and check for leaks.
Next fairly regular problem is the electric fans behind the radiator. Make sure they work. One should come on with the A/C - or around midrange of the temp gage. It will kick on and off as needed when the car is sitting idling. If it does not, the engine will run up to the top of the gage. Then both come on to keep the engine from overheating.
If a fan is locked up you will need to get a new one. If you are not sure why it does not run, unplug it's connector and jump it to the battery to see if it is good. There are relays in the box in front of the battery for the cooling fans. You can switch them around to check for bad relays. And of course, don't neglect to check the fuses.
