I've had the dreaded FDM (Fuel Deliver Module) problem with my 9/99 Contour V6. It used to be that it was o.k as long as I kept 1/2 or more of a tank of gas in the car. But on a recent trip through NC, even with a full tank, the car would lose power after 10 minutes and I had to wait on the side of the highway for a few minutes for the pump to cool so that it would pump again.
I found the latest pump part number on this site XS2Z-9H307-CA
and went and picked one up from the local dealer ($250). I thought of using the focus pump but was hoping that the new design may alleviate the real problem - a bad sock pickup design.
Included with the new FDM is a new ring, gasket and many other parts to replace little parts when pulling the tank, etc. Also included was a 12 page set of instructions on how to remove the tank, cut the retaining ring off of the bottom of the tank (with a special tool that isn't included) so that the new pump can actually fit in the tank.
The parts bags and the instruction set mention the word "program". As in replacement program. However, I think the program they are referring to is the Cougar Program 04N02:
http://www.autosafety.org/uploads/p...04N02Dealer.pdfhttp://www.fordforums.com/showthread.php?t=71629Since the Cougar and the Contour/Mystique share the same fuel pump (and probably the same tank) I'm wondering why the Contour/Mystique are not included in the Program, as the Contour/Mystique have the same problem (stalling, hesitation, loss of power, surging), and the problem is definitely fuel level related (much worse below 1/2 tank than above).
I'm contacting Ford Customer Service about this. I would encourage all 99-2002 Contour/Mystique owners to do the same to see if we can force the issue and get them to expand the program to the Contour/Mystique.
