I just bought a pre 98 tunk lid for my CSVT. What can I do to prep it so I do not have to pay as much to get it painted? I am getting quotes around 400-500 to prep it and fix a few small dents, then paint. The trunk lid is champagne and I am getting it painted black. I know sanding it down will help get the old paint off, but how much sanding? Any other suggestions on what to do?

take an orbital (or other) sander to it and grind that [censored] to bare metal, i would then clean with 99.9% alchohol and prime within a few minutes after cleaning. if painting black, i would prime either gray or black.

prime, wetsand, prime again and wetsand...this is the limit of my knowledge, what does he do next lol...

First off, You dont have to sand to bare metal. If you are going to fix the dents you go about fixing them the same way you would any other dent (grind down to metal and lay and sand your mud). If you fix the dents you are going to have to prime the spots you put your mudd, Spray out about foot around the spots and wet sand with like 600. with the rest of the trunklid you can sand with 320 and a red scotchbrite pad. This will be enough so all they have to do is clean it, spray sealer, and paint. this will cut the cost down alot.
