I've got a '96 Mystique with a 2.0L engine. I have 157 000km's on her. I was waiting to change my timing belt until later this summer, but my temperature went right up and I seemed to be losing some coolant from the lower passenger side of the engine, so I changed my timing belt as well as my serp. belt and water pump.
Since leaving the garage, my car seemed to run fine, but when I came to an idle at a light, my temp started to climb again.
Will a bad thermostat cause this? I can't see the leak but you can smell it and this is really starting to boggle me. Thanks.

A bad fan will cause that, is yours coming on?

Yes it does come on, but it's up around the "L" when it does.

If your thermostat hasn't been changed before, and there are no obvious coolant leaks, my guess is that your thermostat is getting lazy...be good insurance, anyway. And while you're at it, change the PCV valve [between x-man and block, held in w/ 1 bolt that is located just above trans/just below outlet housing]...it'll be real easy to replace, once you remove the housing.

Thats where both of mine ran til I changed the thermostat to 180*. On hills at slow speed the temp rockets up to the "L" still. As a test, I turned on the A/C - this starts the cooling fan- and the temp dropped. Conclusion - Normal operation As long as the temp. stays in the NORMAL range......its normal. Test everything , then stop worrying......

Well, I think I might have found the problem. I checked my coolant this morning to see if it was any good, (because the garage that just changed my WP and TB on Friday charged my $18 for it) and low and behold, it didn't read at all! So, I checked my girlfriend's coolant to make sure my tester wasn't busted and it read -45 C, so the idiot that worked on my car must have put the old watered down coolant back in and charged me for new stuff...No wonder it was heating up at idle. I can't wait to talk to these guys tomorrow.
Update to follow.....
Thanks for all your help guys.

The old coolant is not the problem with it running hot. Keep looking.
Find out if your fans work on BOTH high and low speed. Chances are, they're only working on high and the low speed operation is being skipped.

I'm not sure what you mean about high and low speed? The fan does come on when it gets really hot (up around the "L") but it only stays on for 10 - 20 seconds. I'm starting to think it might be the relay for the fan. Any thoughts?

He means you have two fans, a high speed, and a low speed. Does the low speed kick on at all? The low speed should come on just sitting at idle as the temp. rises, the high speed comes on with the AC on (which you said was already working).
