Hey all...

I'm heading up north to the Saco River in New Hampshire for the 9th and 10th to do an overnight canoe trip. Has anyone done any paddling or even sightseeing up in those parts. (basically i'm looking for a scouting report) I believe the town we are launching from is called Conway. I'm excited to go, but i'm not too thrilled about transporting my canoe 200 miles on the contour... ugh

Used to do it once a year. Last time I went, I think it was 3 summers ago, I went with about 30+ people. We put in, then the dumbasses I was with pulled over about 3/4 of a mile down stream to camp. You need to make more headway than that on the first day. Got really drunk that night. But next day it rained the whole day. Started out as a mist, progressed to rain, then stopped and the sun came out. We probably had about 7-8 miles at that point so we pulled over to have a good time. Well, after that it poured and poured. There were times when I just gave up paddling. The bugs were out of control. ALL the beaches were taken up so we couldn't camp, plus we were with people that just kept on going so we fell back to drink some beers and make the best of it while floating. Well, intead of pulling over, the people that went ahead got fed up and did the whole 18 miles in one day. We had no way to contact them, but once you get to a point up there, the last 4 miles or so there are no beaches, thats like the point of no return. I usually have a good time, but this was a complete wash. I ended up driving back down to Dracut that night.

I hope the weather holds out for you man. It can definitely be a good time. I know where you are putting in, thats bascially where everone puts in. My advice, make some good ground the first day. When I was a kid, we used to go with my parents and a bunch of their friends. They used to like to go half the way the first day, then camp at one place for both the nights, then go the rest of the day on Sunday. Or you could camp twice, whatever floats your boat.

Thanks for your reply, it certainly was helpful. We had a great time, and I would recommened it to any New Englander. (Although I didn't realize it would be such a HUGE party atmosphere) We ended up covering 23 miles over 3 days, and took the shuttle from Maine back to Conway, NH. Thanks again for your post, I saw it just before we left. Here are some pics of our trip:

Trust me, you guys weren't the originators of the Dune Jump!
That place was where we camped out that weekend we went as well. Good beach. Glad the weather held out of you.

lol, yeah i figured we didn't invent the dune jump, but I claimed it anyway . That was definitely an ideal beach to camp as you said. The sand wasn't so forgiving the next morning during our tackle football antics. We all got pretty scraped up, and I busted a few ribs during the process!
