I had some friends in the car a couple days ago and one of them decided it would be amusing to try and steal shotgun by climbing between the front seats and then sitting on the front passenger until he gave up and switched.

The chain of events that occurred after that resulted in my headrest being broken. That is, the fabric part flops around loosely on top of the metal supporting rods. Not only is it probably useless in a crash, but its annoying to put my head back and have nothing there to rest my head on.

I'd rather not have to buy a whole new headrest if I can get out of it, so I wanted to know if anyone knows how to get the fabric part off of the headrest, or if that's even possible? I think I can fix it if I can get inside, but how on earth do I get this thing open?

Um, immature, yes, that's one way of putting it. Then again, I just graduated from high school, and immaturity seems to be de rigueur for high school students.

Thanks for the info Stryker, I will probably try a salvage yard next week. Maybe one of the guys at Signature LM will give me a deal? At $250, it would have to be a heck of a deal for it to be worth it. I am going to try and see if I can get the money out of the guy who broke it, once I figure out how much its going to cost me. I need to save my money for college.

Back to your original question - Yes, you can remove it and repair it (depending on what was broken). The cover itself is kinda like a ziplock bag. There is a 'ziplock' fastener at the bottom of the headrest. You don't normally see the fastener, because the cover is designed to hide the 'ziplock' from view. Anyway, if you remove the headrest, and turn it upside down so you can see the bottom of it, and then if you will pull on the fabric, you'll see what I'm talking about. The ziplock just pops into place.

Once you get the ziplock open, the cover can be easily removed. On the inside, you will probably find that you have stripped a bolt out of a plastic thingamajig. A larger or longer bolt will probably cure the problem.

Updating this thread. I found the two plastic circlips that permit the headrest to tilt had broken. I discarded the lower (flat) portion and left the portion the encircles the rod. Using ordinary, metal, perforated pipe strap I fashioned a new loop. If done properly, you will not even need to drill holes, just use the existing ones in the metal strap. Bolt it back in and tighten down and it works good as new.
