My 95 Zetec is still overheating. If I run the AC it just runs hot (L to edge of red), if i run without AC on it runs full red. I put a 180 thermostat in it, flushed the cooling system and put in new orange coolant and it made no difference. The fan appears to be doing it's thing so now I'm down to either a clogged radiator or bad water pump. Do the Zetecs have impeller issues like the Duretecs ? Is there anything I'm overlooking ?

i beleive the zetec also has the plastic impeller but I am not sure, mine was fine at 104k
is the car actually over heating or is it just the guage?
it could be as simple as your guage is off, has it always read like this or just recently? it might just be the temp sensing unit also
mine has never gone into the red but it has come close, but remember these engines run hot
in all reality there is no way to know what the temp guauge is reading because it isn't numerically calibrated, but since it is a 95 I don't know of an easy way to find the actual temp out

I do believe that Zetecs suffer the same waterpump problems as the V6's. If your're overheating at all conditions that would be a very good place to start.
Anyone else?

Well mine reads high, several shops have said it is running fine though. Like mine wiil run in ML, then A/C brings it back to R, A/C off goes back to ML. So I guess the gauage is just a piece of junk.
Ours dont have the water pump problem, many people have over 100k and have the original pump. You will be lucky to find a Duratech with 70k and the original pump.

I think I may have a gauge problem. Yesterday it went into the red and stayed there but the overflow tank never boiled so I got out my Snap-On digital temp meter (it has a probe that you touch to the surface or liquid being measured) and read 161 degrees on the surface of the radiator hose coming from the thermostat housing and 182 degrees immersed in the overflow tank. I ordered a new gauge sending unit so we'll see what that does. But what baffles me is that last week it did get hot enough to boil the overflow tank ?????

I don't think so - I haven't heard about the impeller disintegrating on a Zetec. They more likely to have the classic WP problems - shaft & bearing.

Than I'm wrong, I wasn't sure if they used the same type waterpump in the Zetec as in the Duratec.. Well, disregard my earlier statement

Granted these engines do run hot, but if we always allow them to flux so much in heat, we are going to blow head gaskets, Heating issues should NOT be overlooked.

From personal experience I can say that the stock pump will fail. My wife's Contour is a '95 and she is the original owner. The pump died at 163,000 miles. That's a pretty good lifespan for a pump, but the impeller did fail. It never lost coolant. If you have a Zetec and you start to get cooling problems, get the system checked,(unless of course you can do it yourself). edit Also, having owned one since new, I would not say that Zetecs naturally run hot. Again, we had no problems until the pump failed. The guage has read warm since, but the thermostat still opens around 200 degrees. I would suggest that people check their temp sending unit and the rest of the system before casting judgement on the Zetec.
