My girlfriend had an encounter with a concrete lightpole base last night, with her '03 Civic. She misjudged the remaining distance and stopped too late. I guess her attention was more for the mass of people watching the fireworks contest from our workplace's parking lot...

The plastic cover is not cracked, but scratched in a very bad way. The car is black and now the white-ish plastic base is showing through. It looks like when you grate cheese, some is missing at one end, and there is an accumulation of plastic at the other end of the scratch.

Now my question: what are her options now? Is there a way to repair this at home, should she get the car to a body shop, or should we be shopping for a new bumper? She has no plans of making a rice-mobile out of her Civic, it's a stock LX and it's supposed to stay that way.

I should be able to get pictures of the damaged area tomorrow morning...

Cheapest, do it your self sand down high spots, bondo low spots prime paint. (Not sure how the bondo will work on plastic)
Easiest, buy new bumper cover, or have a body shop fix it.

That's what I was thinking: Bondo on flexible plastic.. I'm afraid it would not stay there...

I'll probably take the Civic to a body shop and get a quote...

Thanks!

The whole bumper needs to be repainted if I was you. That bumper seems to have very bad cosmetic paint defects. If you cant afford a paint job for your bumper use a 2000 grade sandpaper and lightly wet sand that area. You need to keep the sand paper wet at all times. After you do this use a ortible buffer with wax. That should take care of the problem if the clear coat isnt too deep.

Those paint defects can be removed with a good wash mitten and soap..

To get to work we have to take the highway that follows the St-Lawrence river, so all those ugly spots are really dead bugs.. car is new, and looks like new whenever I have the time to wash it - these days I don't, unfortunately!

We're hoping for the best, and will be taking the car to a body shop soon - it's not critical, and my girlfriend is in one of her "Oh [censored it myself] it!" days...

Thanks guys!
