How do you test the resistor that's mounted on the fan?

To see if it's broken?

You can disconnect the resistor, then plug in the power wire directly to the fan (temporarily!) to see if the fan engages. But that's just a thought... The resistor is just a bridge between the power wire & fan.

Is your fan not coming on?

You mean he relay? You need an ohmmeter. Usually with the electric fans if it is not the fan relay, then the fan motor may be fried.

A little background. It's a 95 2.0l ZETEC 5 speed with 180K miles. I've been having overheating problems lately. It's my wife's car, and we had a buch of work done after it severely overheated and blew the head gasket, (new water pump and timing belt, head gasket, thermostat, etc.). Last weekend it pegged to the red after climbing a hill and coming to a stop. I checked under the hood and steam was coming out of the overflow cap. Since then, it has been loosing enough coolant to empty the overflow tank daily. I can't see a leak at all. I did a KOEO test, and all of the fan related relays clicked on, and the fan ran in both low and high speeds. I am assuming that all of the relays in the underhood relay box are ok because of this. I checked the thermostat by putting it in boiling water. It opened and closed fine. I tested the Coolant Temperature Sensor and the resistance went down when heat was applied to the sensor. I put straight power to the fan, and it ran well. I put a meter on the resistor that is mounted on the fan and got a reading of zero K ohms. I don't know what value it should have. That's where I'm at now. I have a new radiator and hoses, but I don't want to waste them if the problem is this resistor. Remeber, I'm talking about the thing mounted on the fan assembly.

you say you checked the coolant temp. sensor(?) is that the one with the one wire to it that tells the dash board guage that the temp. is high or low(NORMAL)????? if so then you also have to check the other sensor(ECT ) that has TWO wire attached to it.. this is what goes back to the computer to tell the computer when to turn the fan on....
the coolant temp. sensor that has one wire to it only goes to the dash to report on the heat of the coolant to the guage....

Just a thought... I have an SE w/167kmi on it. Removed the radiator to replace it with an SVT unit. The fins were 50-65% blocked with bugs, sand, etc. I am pretty confident this was contributing to my overheating problems. I haven't gotten the car back on the road yet, so I can't guarantee this but it is worth looking at...

It is the sensor referred to as the ECT. Not the sensor for the instrument cluster guage. I just got the radiator out, and it is pretty well blocked with bugs, etc. So far it is the only weak link. I'm about to put the new one in. I would still love to get info on testing the resistor that's mounted to the fan before I have to put it back in. Thanks to everyone for their help so far.

Your prior tests seemed to confirm fan low speed was working so resistor must be ok. Not familiar with one fan setup but with two fans resistor is mounted to fan shroud at bottom, driver's side.
IIRC a recall added an overcurrent device to early fans at the fan motor connections, perhaps that's the device you are measuring. Zero resistance would then make sense.

Read this thread re recall: Fan info

Well, I got the new radiator and the top hose in. That lower hose is a bear! It appears that the ehxaust manifold has to come off to get to one of the clamps. It's the wife's car and I'm going to just bite the bullet this time and take it to a shop. I never found a leak, or any real problem besides the original radiator being a little blocked. I'll post again when I find out what the problem is.
