The temp guage on my 1998 Merc Mystique Zetec keeps dropping down and coming back up to normal operating temp. I've had the thermostat changed, so that's not the problem. I was told that it's probably a bad sending unit.

My question is, which sensor is the one to the temp guage on the dash? There's one on the top of the thermostat housing and one under it.

If someone would happen to have the part number, I'd appreciate that as well.

Thanks everyone!

Bottom one = to gauge
top one = to computer
Change thermostats to 180* F

If by "dropping down" you mean all the way to cold, then check for loose electrical connection at the sender unit first.

Had the exact same problem on mine. It's the one underneath the thermostat that's bad.

Hey, thanks for the info, guys.

Now does anyone have any tips for getting at that sensor. It's not in the easiest place to get to. Will everything have to come out to get to it?

Aw, nuts... I just had the thermostat replaced.

If I do this myself, how much coolant (and mess) can I expect to come gushing out of there? I'd like to make this as quick and painless as possible.

I don't know how different is on the zetec...But I just did mine on the SVT and I only lost a minimal amount of fluid. As long as you get the new one in under 30 seconds you should be fine...Good luck.
